Commander (EDH) is Magic: The Gathering's most-played format in 2026, and the single best starting point for new MTG players who want a long-term hobby instead of a weekly meta chase. Wizards of the Coast took direct governance of the format in October 2024 through the new Commander Format Panel, rolled out an official 5-bracket power-level system in 2025, and has stacked 2026 with Commander-friendly releases from Lorwyn Eclipsed to Marvel Super Heroes. What Makes Commander Special
Commander stands apart from other Magic formats in several ways:
- 100-card singleton: One copy of each card (except basic lands) creates variety and rewards deck-building creativity
- Commander identity: Your commander defines your deck's color identity. Every non-land card must share colors with your commander

Commander Brackets (The Official Power-Level System)
In 2025, Wizards rolled out Commander Brackets, the official framework for describing deck power level. Brackets replaced the informal 1-10 scale that every playgroup interpreted differently. The Commander Brackets system has 5 tiers:

"Game Changers" is a curated Wizards list of ~40 cards identified as format-impacting (Sol Ring, Rhystic Study, The One Ring, Cyclonic Rift, etc.), updated periodically. Brackets 1-3 cap Game Changers to keep games casual. See the Commander Brackets update page for the current list.
2024-25 Banlist Changes
In September 2024, the former Commander Rules Committee banned Nadu, Winged Wisdom, Mana Crypt, Dockside Extortionist, and Jeweled Lotus. Community backlash led the RC to dissolve itself on September 30, 2024, and hand control of the format to Wizards. In October 2024, Wizards announced the Commander Format Panel (managed by Gavin Verhey) as the official advisory group. The banlist those cards hit remains in effect for bracket 1-4 casual play. If you are brand new, start with a precon. You do not need to build from scratch.
- TMNT Commander (March 2026): Four turtle-themed decks, gift-level production quality, great entry points for Jund/Bant/Esper/Naya archetypes
- Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander (January 2026): Blight Curse and Dance of the Elements. Lorwyn's tribal-heavy design is beginner-friendly
- Marvel Super Heroes Commander (June 2026): Universes Beyond with superhero-themed commanders. High resale demand
- Bloomburrow Commander (2024, if in print): Woodland Wisdom, Squirreled Away, Animated Army, Peace Offering. The animal folk theme is still one of the most approachable recent precon cycles

- Aggro: Fast creature-based strategies. Examples: Krenko, Mob Boss; Voja, Jaws of the Conclave; Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
- Control: Counter spells, board wipes, gradual card advantage. Examples: Talrand, Sky Summoner; Ertai Resurrected; Niv-Mizzet, Parun

Essential Cards for Every Commander Deck
Mana Rocks (Colorless Ramp)
- Sol Ring: Format staple, belongs in nearly every deck
- Arcane Signet: Two mana for any color in your identity
- Commander's Sphere: Ramp that cycles for a card late game
- Mind Stone: Efficient 2-mana rock that sacs for a card
- Talismans (Talisman of Dominance, Progress, etc.): 2-mana 2-color rocks, premium for 2-color decks
- Fellwar Stone: 2-mana any-opponent-color rock, cheap and flexible
Note: Jeweled Lotus is banned in Commander as of September 2024. Mana Crypt and Dockside Extortionist are also banned for bracket 1-4 play.

- Blue: Rhystic Study (political card draw), Mystic Remora (first 4 turns often = 10+ cards), Brainstorm
- Black: Phyrexian Arena, Sign in Blood, Read the Bones

Commander Etiquette
Commander is a social format. These habits keep your pod fun:
- Rule 0 conversation: Discuss brackets and deck power level before the game starts. "This is a bracket 3 Atraxa deck with 2 Game Changers" beats "this deck is a 7"
- Spread the threat assessment: Do not target one player repeatedly
- Take reasonable turns: Long combo turns frustrate other players
- Accept losses gracefully: In a 4-player format you will lose more than you win
- Communicate combos: Explain what you are doing so new players can learn

100 cards exactly. That is 1 commander plus 99 other cards. Every card other than basic lands must be a single copy (singleton format).
What is the best Commander precon to start with in 2026?
For total beginners, the TMNT Commander decks (released March 6, 2026) are the most approachable. Each of the 4 turtle-themed precons plays differently and at bracket 2 level out of the box. Lorwyn Eclipsed and Marvel Super Heroes precons are strong alternatives released later in 2026.
What are Commander Brackets?
Commander Brackets are the official 5-tier power-level system Wizards of the Coast rolled out in 2025. They replaced the old 1-10 power scale. Can I play infinite combos in Commander?
Yes, depending on your bracket. Bracket 1-2 play generally avoids 2-card infinite combos. Bracket 3-4 allows them (Bracket 3 limits early-game combo). Bracket 5 (cEDH) embraces them. Always confirm with your pod in the Rule 0 conversation.
How much does a competitive Commander deck cost?
A Bracket 2 precon is $40-$60 out of the box. A tuned Bracket 3 deck is typically $250-$500. Bracket 4 optimized decks run $800-$2,000. Bracket 5 cEDH decks can exceed $5,000 if you want the expensive staples (Mana Vault, Mox Diamond, Ancient Tomb, etc.), though proxy-friendly cEDH pods are common.
Is proxying allowed in Commander?
It depends on the playgroup. Casual pods (Brackets 1-3) often allow proxies for expensive cards if the group agrees in Rule 0. Official sanctioned events and cEDH tournaments do not allow proxies. ORB's Thursday Commander Nights are casual and proxies are welcome for testing if your pod is OK with it.
