FNM Formats Explained

Standard

Standard uses only cards from the most recent sets (roughly the last two to three years of releases). Booster Draft

Here’s how it works: each player opens a pack, picks one card, and passes the rest to the next player. You repeat this through three packs, then build a deck from what you’ve drafted plus basic lands (provided by the store). It tests your card evaluation and deck-building skills in real time.

What you need: Just yourself and the entry fee. Everything else is provided. Sleeves are recommended but not required. If you’ve never drafted before, tell us when you arrive — we’ll walk you through the process.

Commander (EDH)

Commander is the most popular Magic format worldwide, and it plays differently from most other formats. You build a 100-card singleton deck (no duplicates except basic lands) led by a legendary creature that serves as your “commander.” Games are played in pods of 3-4 players in a free-for-all multiplayer format.

Commander nights at ORB draw a dedicated crowd. The format is inherently social — politics, alliances, and table talk are part of the game. Pioneer includes cards from Return to Ravnica (2012) forward, giving you access to a wider pool of cards than Standard without going all the way back to Magic’s earliest sets. It’s become a staple competitive format and offers a middle ground in terms of card availability and deck cost.

What you need: A 60-card constructed deck plus a 15-card sideboard, using only Pioneer-legal cards. Pioneer has a healthy meta with diverse viable strategies, making it rewarding for players who like to tune and optimize their builds.

Sealed

Like Draft, Sealed is a limited format where you build a deck from product you open at the event. Each player receives six booster packs, opens them all at once, and builds a 40-card deck from the pool. No drafting or passing cards — you work with whatever you open. What to Expect at Your First FNM

Walking into a game store for the first time — especially for an organized event — can feel like showing up to a party where you don’t know anyone. Here’s exactly what to expect so there are no surprises:

Before the Event

  1. Check the format and start time. Visit our events calendar to see what format is running that Friday and when registration opens. Arriving 15-20 minutes early gives you time to settle in.
  2. Bring your deck (for constructed formats like Standard, Pioneer, or Commander) or just your entry fee (for Draft or Sealed).
  3. Bring basic supplies: Sleeves for your cards, a way to track life totals (pen and paper, a spindown die, or a phone app like MTG Life Counter), and a few dice for counters and tokens.

When You Arrive

  1. Check in with staff. Let us know you’re here for FNM. If it’s your first time, tell us — we’ll make sure you’re oriented and comfortable.
  2. Register and pay. Entry fees vary by format. Draft and Sealed have higher fees because product is included. Constructed events are typically lower.
  3. Find a seat. For Draft, you’ll be assigned a table. For constructed, you can sit anywhere in the play area.

During the Event

  1. Pairings go up. We pair players using Swiss-style pairings. Your first round is random; subsequent rounds match you against opponents with similar records.
  2. Play your match. Most FNM rounds are best-of-three games with a 50-minute time limit. Your opponent will introduce themselves, you’ll shuffle up, determine who goes first, and play.
  3. Report your results. After each round, the winner (or both players) report the match result to the tournament organizer.
  4. Repeat. A typical FNM runs 3-4 rounds depending on attendance. Everyone plays every round — there’s no elimination.

After the Event

  1. Prizes are distributed based on final standings. Top finishers typically receive store credit, packs, or promo cards.
